Canvas vs Poster: Which Wall Art Should You Choose?

Canvas vs Poster: Which Wall Art Should You Choose?

Both can transform a room, but they suit different budgets, spaces and ways of decorating. The best choice is usually less about which format is 'better' and more about how you want the finished wall to feel.

Choose a canvas if you want more presence

A stretched canvas has depth and arrives as a more substantial object on the wall. It works well when one image needs to act as a focal point above a sofa, bed, desk or sideboard. Canvas is also a simple option if you do not want to source a separate frame.

Choose a poster if you want flexibility

A rolled poster is normally the more affordable way to buy larger artwork. It is also easier to swap as your room changes, and it gives you freedom to choose a frame that matches the rest of your décor. Posters are particularly useful for gallery walls, rented homes and rooms where you like to refresh the artwork more often.

For a gallery wall

Posters usually make the easiest starting point because different sizes can be combined without making the wall feel too heavy. A single canvas can also work as an anchor, with smaller framed posters around it.

For a gift

If you know the recipient's taste but not their framing style, a canvas can be the simpler ready-to-display choice. If you know they already use a particular frame system, a poster may be more useful.

Our rule of thumb

Choose canvas when the artwork itself should feel like the finished feature. Choose a poster when flexibility, framing choice and price matter more.
